FAQ
What is BitTorrent?
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (or P2P)
protocol
used for the distribution of large files.

Azureus (a more complex BitTorrent client)
Overview of other BitTorrent clients
What is a .torrent file?
This is a small metadata file. Metadata here means that the file contains information about the data you want to download, not the data itself.
Your BitTorrent client needs the .torrent file to connect to the tracker (see below) and download the data you want.
What are seeds?
A seed is a client that has a complete copy of the data of a certain torrent. Once your BitTorrent client finishes downloading, it will remain open until you click the Finish button (or otherwise close it). This is known as being a seed or seeding.
What are leechers?
A leecher is a client that is currently downloading a torrent. Generally a leecher does not have the complete file, otherwise it would be called a seed.
What is a tracker?
A server on the internet that acts to coordinate the actions of BitTorrent clients. When you open a torrent, your machine contacts the tracker and asks for a list of seeds and peers to connect to.
What is a private tracker? (icon:
)
A private tracker is a tracker which requires registration before you can use this service. Such trackers usually have a high amount of seeds, because users get banned if their ratio is too low.
What are all those .rar, .r01, .r02 files?
These files are so-called RAR archives. You need to install WinRAR to extract the data of the files. WinRAR can be downloaded from
this site
.
What is a magnet link?
Azureus magnet links are a new way of linking torrent files. Instead of downloading the torrent from a webserver, you get it directly from a seeder/leecher. The biggest advantage is that you might be able to download the content of the torrent, even if the tracker is down or closed for registration. You need the latest version of the
Azureus client
with DHT enabled (open your UDP port) to use this feature.
What does this icon mean (
)?
This indicates that the uploader has also added a description of the download.
Is there any plugin for Firefox?
Click here to install the Firefox TorrentParty search plugin
, after installion click on the Google logo in the search field on the right top and choose "TorrentParty".
